My Diary Essay

My life is a sea of endless hardship. Struggling to open my heavy eyes, I began my busy day. After finishing my routine job drowsily before the first lark awaked, I had to clean the grand villa inside and out, finish washing piles of dirty clothes and prepare breakfast for the whole family. One after another, they got up and went downstairs, wearing tired expressions on their faces, as if they had done household chores for a whole night instead of sleeping comfortably in the soft and warm bed. I smiled a smooth smile towards all of them, although I wanted to tear at them in the deep bottom of my heart. All of them ill-treat me, including my mother, who is my dear mother, but my master now. Since she divorced with my father, my carefree childhood has become a piece of bittersweet history covered with dust. This grand villa is like a crystal palace to others, however, it is the hell full of misery to me. â€Å"God Damn! You fool must have shirked on the cleaning†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Peter, the son of my mother and her present husband, found a dead fly lying in a tiny corner of the washroom and jumped with anger. Before my explanation and realization, he gave me a slap on the cheek. In the mist of my eyes, I caught a slight smile on my mother. On the way to market, I came across my father. Spontaneously, I was surrounded by the sea of warmth and kindness, I burst into tears and poured out the bitterness of my life. †Please! Please let me leave that castle of misery, Dad! I would like to be with you no matter how poor you are†¦Ã¢â‚¬  My beloved dad stroked my hair without saying anything. I could feel his slight tremble and waves of love, which I had almost forgotten as time passed by. Suddenly, he said to me earnestly: †You have been a lady of 20, old enough to take your own responsibilities. Life belongs to you, and no one can offer you a real help except yourself†¦Ã¢â‚¬  †¦ I woke up, only to find the whole room was still buried in endless darkness and it was just a dream! I struggled to sit on and took a deep breath. My terrible life in the nightmare showed continuously in my mind, together with my father’s words. With trembling hands I wiped the stream of sweats and tears on my face. Luckily enough, I live a life of ease in reality. Under considerate cares of my parents, I am enjoying a more comfortable life than my peers, without worrying about almost anything. My parents and I have been living harmoniously and peacefully since my memory started. However, as time passes by, I am used to taking their loves and cares as granted. Only at that moment did I realize how happy I am. By comparing my dream with the reality, I found myself as blissful as a little princess. Moreover, I would like to thank the nightmare for giving me some experience and understanding on tragedy. No one wants to be involved in a tragedy, but when it falls into our lives unexpectedly, we should try our best to challenge and conquer it. I wish tragedy will be a permanent stranger to me, but I am fully aware that it is impossible. Everyone’s life is bridge from the cradle to the grave and it is full of barriers and thorns. But no matter what happens, I will keep in mind what father said in my dream and face challenges with pride and courage.

John Maynard Keynes, the Father of Modern Theoretical Economics Essay

John Maynard Keynes (5 June 1883 – 21 April 1946), a British economist known also as the father of modern theoretical economics, had made a great impact on contemporary economic as well as political theory. His ideas were tapped by governments for their fiscal policies. He is most well known on his interventionist policy when it comes to fiscal and monetary measures, specifically, to mitigate the undesirable effect of recessions, depressions, and even booms. An article from Time magazine on the 100 Most Important People of the Century, contend that â€Å"[h]is radical idea that governments should spend money they don’t have may have saved capitalism† (Reich, no date). As an economist, his first share of international fame was when he was selected as a delegate of the Paris Peace Conference of 1918–1919. It was during this conference that the victors of the World War 1 (specifically, Woodrow Wilson, Georges Clemenceau, and David Lloyd George) imposed war reparations on Germany. Keynes held his tongue during the conference but let out a roar as soon as he returned to England (Reich, no date). He wrote a book entitled The Economic Consequences of Peace. He wrote that the Germans would not be able to pay the victors. He called Wilson a â€Å"blind, deaf Don Quixote†, Clemenceau a xenophobe with â€Å"one illusion — France, and one disillusion — mankind†, and Lloyd George a â€Å"goat-footed bard, this half-human visitor to our age from the hag-ridden magic and enchanted woods of Celtic antiquity. † Keynes predicted that the reparations demanded by the victors would keep Germany impoverished and might ultimately threaten the neighboring countries if not all of Europe (Reich, no date). And we know that he is indeed right as if it was a prophecy. The book sold almost a hundred thousand copies on that period. But it was only later on after three decades that the real effect of his treatise was felt. After the end of World War II, both US and Britain (as victors of the war) remembered Keynes’ admonition. The best way to attain a lasting peace is by helping the vanquished start all over again – public investing to create trading partners and building solid democracies (like n the case of Germany, Italy, and Japan during that war; Reich, no date). Keynes founded that branch of economics that is termed â€Å"macroeconomics† today. This is his greatest influence in the history of economics. This actually came from a book he wrote during the depths of the Great Depression. The book was called â€Å"The general theory of employment, interest and money† (published on 1936). The idea is pretty much easy to understand: Governments should not leave the market alone when, and especially, the economy is running slow (interventionist policy of the government). It is during periods of dull economy or recession that markets are saturated and businesses either do not invest or reduce their investment. Such situation, according to Keynes, is a prologue for a very dangerous cycle: â€Å"less investment, fewer jobs, less consumption and even less reason for business to invest† (Keynes, in Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia). In 1942, John Maynard Keynes was raised to the House of Lords and was accord the title Baron Keynes of Tilton, County of Sussex. Keynes played a crucial role in the negotiations that transpired in the creation of the Bretton Woods system (the system/conference that created the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and the World Trade Organization, as we know it today). He was the head of the British Commission and the chairman of the World Bank Commission. He was the brainchild behind the management of currencies between and among countries. On April 12th 1861 the famous American Civil War began, citizens from all over the United states fought against one another. The war pitted brother against brother in a fight primarily over the freedom of slaves. The majority of soldiers in the Civil War were white especially those serving the southern regiments, however African Americans served as well. These African Americans were referred to as Buffalo Soldiers, a name given to them later by Native Americans because of the texture of their hair. This shows that in his eyes, all of his workers are interchangeable and of no real value to him. By saying â€Å"they keep changing† he shows the audience that although work is a necessity for working class women, he was always in control of the fates and did not even care if he callously dismissed Eva as she was just cheap labour to him. Therefore, by the victim of the play being a working class female, Priestley highlights the vulnerability of women in those times and causes the audience to realise that it should have been socially unacceptable. Although originally, Sheila is shown to be immature and appears obsessive over material wealth and goods rather than other qualities such as honesty we see her changing towards the end of the play. In Act One, she describes the ring Gerald presents her with as â€Å"a beauty† and is described as spending hours shopping. This shows that even the men in the play underestimate her and believe her to be an immature girl (not aided by her calling her mother â€Å"mummy†) who has the tendency to become â€Å"hysterical†. Nevertheless, at the end of the play she has made realisations and decisions which the men appear incapable of such as responsibility for her actions. Furthermore, she begins to see her parents and fiance in a new light which shows she is becoming more independent and refuses to go along with her parent’s charades any longer. The audience is told of how Eric took advantage of Eva when drunk, how Mr Birling forced her out of work for voicing her opinion and of Gerald’s loveless. This shows the men to be callous in many respects and to be exploiting women. However, Eric’s remorse also shows how Priestley believed if the men and women all realised the need of change with regards to attitudes to women, things would become better for everyone

The Role of Nick Carraway As Narrator in The Great Gatsby The novel "The Great Gatsby" can be best described as a narration of a series of events as viewed through the eyes of an important central figure (Nick Carraway) around which a story takes form. A general lack of importance associated with the part a narrator is a generalized notion deduced from the analysis of most novels. However, a reevaluation of the narrative process played by Nick Carraway is in place when it comes to the novel, "The Great Gatsby" as such a concept holds little truth within the domains of such work of literature. The process of portraying virtually all physical and emotional actions and the inferred establishment of a moral norm are two of the main perspectives achieved through the author's usage of narration through Nick. His vital role is the flow of the novel is hence an indication as to his importance as a character in general. This vital role can be first of all seen in the primary role of Nick as a narrator. Physical and emotional actions/reactions of characters within a story relates a great deal to individualistic personality which in turn helps the author generate his/her idea of a certain person/group of people within the mind of the reader. Such a function is undertaken by Nick who is endowed with a keen sense of observation which he uses to reveal the nature of each character. Through Nick, the reader is able to sense the shallow emotional depth Tom Buchanan is capable of experiencing and his apparent harshness of attitude towards others. The brutality of Tom towards his mistress, Myrtle Wilson, as described by Nick (page 37, line 5 - below) is highly demonstrative of this fact. In comparison, we see Gatsby, on the other hand as generally being a physically an emotionally reserved person (but not when it comes to Daisy). His general hospitality and mysteriousness as described by Nick creates an air of splendour and establishes him as a source of profound curiosity in the minds of others. In their own way, other characters are exposed to the reader as well when Nick comes into contact with them. He is thus seen to play a vital role in portraying the emotional disposition underlining each character through their physical involvement in the novel. It should be noted that unlike most other narrative description of events, Nick's role in "The Great Gatsby" extends even further into the lives of each of the other characters. The moral standard by which all other persons are uniquely judged is created through the establishment of a central view point of single narrative character in the novel. The word "unique" is used to describe the form of evaluation Nick partakes in due to his total absence of any form of critical analysis. This lack of personal judgement is seen to manifest itself in the mind of the narrator from the very beginning of Nick's youth through the words of his father. Nick's realization of the equality of man altered through his origin sets him up as a morally sound standard by which all other characters can be measured. It is this personality trait of his which leads him into relationships with people with a great array of morally sound/deficient values. Jordan Baker is described by the author as a woman with an "incurably dishonest" personality. Yet Nick accepts her into the emotional side of his life; proving his firm belief in the concept of being morally reserved in judgement.
